WINE EXPERIENCE AT ” CASTELLO DI TORRE IN PIETRA”
Located west of the city at approx 60 min. far fron citycentre
The estate extends over 150 hectares amongst gentle hills composed of tufa and breccia which are particularly suited to the cultivation of vines. The average altitude of the vineyards is 50 meters above sea level. The estate is in the Fiumicino area and all vineyards are located within the D.O.C. Tarquinia appellation.
The cellar is located inside the medieval “Borgo” village of Torre in Pietra. It was built in the 12th century by digging into the tufa hills behind the Castello. In the thirties, while digging the connecting tunnel between the two caverns, two mammoth tusks were found here.
The estate Torre in Pietra Leprignana, was bought in the thirties by Luigi Albertini, editor and owner of the newspaper, Corriere della Sera, and senator.
He created a model estate on the 2.500 hectares of land, specializing in milk production and implemented works for the recovery the marsh land which had been a problem for the health of the residents . He was responsible for bringing black white Friesian cows to Italy and was the founder of the trade-mark “Torre in Pietra”, a well-known dairy label in Latium Region.
Our tours begin with a stroll to the vineyards followed by a visit to the cellar. You will be briefly acquainted with the fermentation area, the wood-ageing room, the bottling and the bottle-ageing areas.
